Trusted Reviews has posted a review of the Canon PowerShot A470.
Despite its very low cost the Canon PowerShot A470 acquits itself well. The build quality could be better, the control layout has a couple of major problems and it’s a lot larger and heavier than it really needs to be, but it makes up for these faults with extremely fast performance, excellent autofocus especially in low light, and even pretty good image quality, although it does have a few problems in this area. In general though the A470 is a genuine bargain and you won’t find much better for the price.

The rumor mill is in full swing after the announcement of the Nikon D700. A poster on DPR, claiming to have “inside” info has posted “spoiler” specs of the Canon 5D Mark II. With a big grain of salt in hand, take a look at the following info:
- Will be announced Monday, September 8, 2008
- MSRP: $2,399.95 (SSP: $2,199.95), body only
- 16MP FF sensor
- 6 FPS
- Max ISO 25,600 (for what it’s worth…it’s more for marketing)
- Full weather sealing
- VGA-resolution display (from same supplier Sony uses for their new Handycams, except in 4:3 aspect ratio here)
- Pop-up flash
- Anti-dust features
- NO Live View
- NO pro AF from 1D (although all points are cross-type)
- NO video mode whatsoever (silliest rumor I’ve ever heard)
- NO compatibility with EF-S lenses (physically impossible anyway)
- NO electronic crop mode for faster shot rate
- NO HDMI-out
- NO UDMA CF support
As you can see, it’s by no means ground-breaking. It’s not going to out-do the Nikon D700 in performance or features (although overall IQ will be very close or indistinguishable). But it will be significantly cheaper. It’s aimed at the more “manual” shooter.
Original 5D will continue to be sold at $1,799.95 (SSP) without any rebates until stock is depleted.

The Casio EX-F1 is getting a firmware update that allows photographers to prerecord movies. We’ve all missed a few seconds of that perfect moment, but with this update, the EX-F1 will start capturing video five seconds before you fully press down the movie button. If you get your finger in the general area, you’ll still be able to catch those great videos.
Firmware Version 1.10 for the EX-F1 will be available as a download on Casio’s website. It will be free. This firmware update is a follow up to April’s Firmware Version 1.02, speeding up start-ups and enabling high speed zooming when fecording video.

It’s very easy today to take more pictures in a single week long vacation than ever imagined possible ten years ago. For one thing, not many people had digital cameras ten years ago and those that did had a lot of problems with ample, cheap storage. Compact Flash and SD cards weren’t as inexpensive and voluminous as they are today. And yet today, images coming directly out of the camera can regularly exceed 10MB or more.
As I see it, there are two main paths to take when a vacation is planned and the camera will be tagging along. Either purchase more memory cards or purchase a digital storage device. I’d like to take a look at both options and lay down some pros and cons to help you decide which path might be right for you.

As excited as we are that major lighting companies are bringing out lines of affordable lighting systems, we are really impressed that some of these systems go beyond just being a light and are complete educational packages. Wescott’s line products that fall under the Photo Basics brand are a perfect example of this new product positioning. The first Photo Basics kit was the constant light kit that we reviewed last year. This year Wescott has added to the Photo Basics line with two new strobes, the StrobeLite and the StrobeLite Plus. We just received the three light StrobeLite system and couldn’t wait to put it through its paces.

Casio heeft zijn Exilim Zoom-lijn uitgebreid met de 8,1-megapixel EX-Z150. Volgens het bedrijf is de nieuwe Exilim de dunste compactcamera ter wereld in zijn marktsegment.
Casio doelt hierbij op de markt voor compactcamera’s met een 4x optische zoom, waarbij de groothoek begint bij 28mm. Gebruikelijk bij compactcamera’s is overigens 36mm. In de groothoekstand wordt voor de lens door Casio een lichtsterkte opgegeven van f/2,6, maar in de telestand van 112mm daalt het grootste diafragma naar f/5,9. Casio sjoemelt overigens een beetje met zijn dikteclaim: op het dunste punt meet deze 18,9mm, maar dit loopt op naar 20,1mm bij de dikkere delen.
De EX-Z150 is de opvolger van de EX-Z100 en beschikt over beeldstabilisatie via het bewegen van de 1/2,5"-ccd- beeldsensor. De genomen foto’s zijn te bekijken op de 3"-lcd met een resolutie van 960 bij 240 pixels. De camera slikt sd- of sdhc-geheugenkaarten, maar er is ook 17,9MB aan geheugen aanwezig voor de opslag van enkele hoge resolutiebeelden. De nieuwe Exilim is vanaf de eerste helft van augustus verkrijgbaar in de kleuren zilver, zwart, rood, roze of groen voor een adviesprijs van 229 euro.

Hasselblad heeft een nieuw high-end model aan zijn professionele H-productlijn toegevoegd. De H3DII-50 kan foto’s van vijftig megapixels schieten en is hiermee zeer geschikt voor studio- en landschapsfotografie.
De nieuwe Hasselblad maakt gebruik van de H3DII-body die al eerder is gebruikt voor de H3DII-31 en H3DII-39, maar de digitale achterwand van de behuizing is voorzien van een 50-megapixel ccd-beeldsensor van Kodak. Deze beeldsensor meet 36,8mm bij 49,1mm - ook wel ‘middenformaat’ genoemd’ - en is met een oppervlakte van iets meer dan 17 vierkante centimeter precies twee keer zo groot als de ‘fullframe’-beeldsensors van de Nikon D3 of de Canon Eos 1Ds Mark III, en ongeveer viereneenhalf keer zo groot als de beeldsensors in de huidige consumenten-dslr’s. De lichtgevoeligheid van de H3DII-50-beeldsensor loopt van iso 50 tot en met iso 400.
De aangekondigde H3DII-50 heeft verder een 3"-lcd met 230.400 pixels en beschikt over live-view en een firewire800-aansluiting. Om de foto’s in RAW-formaat met een gemiddelde grootte van 65MB op te slaan, kan een compactflash-geheugenkaart of Hasselblads Imagebank-harde schijf worden gebruikt, maar de H3DII-50 kan ook direct op een pc of een Mac worden aangesloten. Het gewicht van 2290 gram voor alleen de behuizing betekent dat een stevig statief geen overbodige luxe is. Het is nog niet bekend wanneer de H3DII-50 leverbaar zal zijn en welke adviesprijs Hasselblad in gedachten heeft. Het huidige topmodel, dat een resolutie van 39 megapixel heeft, is verkrijgbaar voor iets meer dan dertigduizend euro.
